Teaching in New York, 1949-1951
From The Collection of Mignon Garland
From 1949 to 1951, Mignon Garland taught children who would otherwise not have come in contact with the Duncan tradition. The New York Teachers Union provided the space for her classes, where she often offered demonstrations and performances. A May 31, 1951 performance is featured in the issue of the Daily Compass shown. The photo caption reads: "The Children's Peace Festival of Dance and Music at Teacher's Center, 206 W. 15th Street produces some of the sweetest, most graceful photos seen in a long time. Dancers, led by Mary Garland, are children of Teachers Union members, and of members of Parents-Teacher groups." Other photos are also from this time period.
