Maria-Theresa created this choreography, named Shattered Dreams, for a tour of Duncan's protégés. The breast-beating motif occurs in several of her dances. The two, distinct themes of this dance contrast the freshness of springtime's renewal with a lugubrious portend of tragedy to come. As in other Duncan works, the dance ends in a recapitulation of the hope and eagerness illustrated in the opening theme.
